Laws of War
U.S. War Department
This compendium of laws and rules is a testimony to America's
reverence for the rule of law as well as its high regard for
"civilized" behavior on the battlefield. The Articles of War were
normative rules covering military duty and punishments allowed for
violations. The Lieber Code was a new and profound law for the
conduct of armies in the field, to include humane treatment of
prisoners and protection of property and civilians. It had a
profound affect on the evolution of the laws of land warfare in use
today. Army Regulations, on the other hand, dealt with the
administration and management of the army-from personnel assignments
to supply and recruiting operations-all three sets of rules were
used by both the Union and Confederate armies. $19.95

Field Artillery Tactics
U.S. War Department
This guide provides the most thorough explanation of how
Civil War artillery operated in the field; definitions of all the
equipment belonging to an artillery battery; explanations on the use
of each piece of equipment; details for handling the horses;
movement of artillery; and formations for battle. The 122
illustrations show the gun, ancillary equipment, caissons and
wagons, harnesses, ammunition types and how they are used, and
emplacement positions. Includes all 39 artillery bugle calls.
Written by a board of officers (the Artillery Board of the Army),
this version is authorized for use in the training and employment of
Union artillery. Also used by Confederate forces, the Confederate
artillerist was trained on and used the identical equipment as the
Union forces. In fact, they relied extensively on captured Union
artillery for their training. HC 432 pp. 122 Illus. Original format.

Tactics
This is an authentic reproduction of the 1862 military
manual, Cavalry Tactics or Regulations for the Instruction,
Formations, and Movements of The Cavalry of the Army and Volunteers
of the United States. This is a Government Printing Office edition,
which includes volumes I and II in one book. Commissioned by the War
Department in 1859, Colonel Cooke describes the latest tactics
learned from a two-year sojourn as a U.S. military observer during
the Crimean War (1856-1858). With the outbreak of the American Civil
War in 1861, the book was used by both Union and Confederate forces.
The new manual defines cavalry organizations and cavalry-unique
terminology. It fully describes the duties of officers and
noncommissioned officers, and the hundreds of tactical movements and
maneuvers for cavalry formations from platoon to division size.

Infantry Attacks
Rommel
Rommel graphically describes his own exploits, and those of his
units, in the swift-moving battles on the Western Front, in the
ensuing trench warfare, in the 1917 campaign in Rumania and the
Carpathians. Had allied military commanders read this
book before WWII, Rommel would have been defeated sooner. out of
